Efficiency of The Internet Search Process for Students of The College of Arts, University of Basra - A Case Study

Abstract

The research aims to identify the efficiency of fourth-year students at the College of Arts at the University of Basra in using the Internet to obtain information, the procedures for searching for information sources, the topics that are searched for, and the problems and difficulties facing students in the process of searching the Internet to obtain information. The practical aspect was based on the curriculum. Descriptive - a case study, in the theoretical aspect, on the documentary approach using traditional and electronic information sources. The questionnaire tool was relied upon as a main tool for collecting data and information for the research. (124) questionnaires were distributed, and the questionnaire form consisted of (14) questions.
The research reached a set of results, including:
1. It was found that a percentage (100%) of the individuals in the research sample that was used were students of the College of Arts, University of Basra, that they have competence in using the Internet to obtain information. The reason for this is that this process contributes to obtaining information related to scientific research to complete special requirements. By studying for graduation and completing the curriculum in terms of assignments, preparing reports, study materials, and sometimes reading, acquiring information, or browsing.
2. It was found that the highest percentage of individuals in the research sample that was used were students of the College of Arts, University of Basra, that they use the search engine (Google) to search the Internet because of the novelty of the information it contains, as well as the ease of using it in obtaining information, its wide spread, and its availability to everyone.
The research came out with a set of recommendations, including:
1. The necessity of establishing computer laboratories in every scientific department in the College of Arts in particular and the colleges of the University of Basra in general to conduct practical lessons and connect them to the Internet and activate their role in all student activities.
2. The necessity of having clear plans to develop the university community’s skills in dealing with modern developments in the field of information technology.
