تتناول الدراسة ترجمة النصوص السياحية العربية الى اللغة الانكليزية في إطار نظرية الغرض. ترمز كلمة (سكوبس) المقتبسة من اللغة الاغريقية الى الغرض او الهدف من الترجمة.
طبقا لنظرية الغرض والتي ترمز في معناها الى المقولة (الغاية تبرر الوسيلة) فأن الغاية او الهدف من الترجمة يعتبر العامل الرئيسي والذي يتم على أساسه اختيار استراتيجيات وطرق الترجمة.
تهدف الدراسة الى تحديد خيارات الترجمة المتاحة للمترجم في اطار نظرية الغرض. كما تهدف ايضا الى توعية المترجم بتوقعات واحتياجات الجمهور المتلقي للترجمة.
تفترض الدراسة ان لكل ترجمة هدف معين يجب تحقيقه وأن هذا الهدف يحدد الطرق والاستراتيجيات المستخدمة في الترجمة. كما تفترض الدراسة بأن على المترجم باعتباره خبيرا بعملية الترجمة ان يؤدي مهام الترجمة بطريقة تخدم مصالح وأهداف المستفيدين من عملية الترجمة.
من أجل التحقق من صحة الفرضيات فقد تم تقديم جزء عملي يتضمن تحليل لعدد من النصوص المقتبسة من نص سياحي بعنوان (النجف الاشرف). اعطيت هذه النصوص الى اربعة مترجمين من اجل القيام بترجمتها وسيتم تدقيق التراجم من اجل التحقق من مدى تحقيقها لهدف الترجمة المتمثل بجذب المزيد من السياح لزيارة المنطقة المستهدفة.
تخلص الدراسة الى ان الترجمة في اطار نظرية الهدف هي عملية موجهة باتجاه اللغة المستهدفة بهدف التوصل الى نص بلغة الهدف يحقق الهدف من عملية الترجمة.
