الملخص

كان الاعتقاد السائد بأن حرب عام 1654 بين الإنكليز والهولنديين إيذاناً بانتهاء التنافس الاستعماري بين الدولتين، لا سيما بعد عقد الصلح بينهما، بيد أن تلك الحرب أحدثت العكس من ذلك، فقد استمر التنافس الاستعماري بين الدولتين لاسيما في منطقة الخليج العربي، إذ استمر الهولنديون بالأساليب القديمة نفسها في نجاح تجارتهم بالخليج العربي بالترغيب تارة وبالترهيب تارةً أخرى، مما أثر كثيراً على تجارة الإنكليز، وكادت أن تغلق تجارتها في المنطقة الخليج العربي أكثر من مرة، وشهد الصراع والتنافس بينهما حدوث ثلاثة حروب، حتى قيام الثورة الجليلة في انكلترا عام 1688 واتحاد العرش الإنكليزي الهولندي في مملكة واحدة، الأمر الذي حد من نشاط الهولنديين، وتحول زمام المبادرة للإنكليز للسيطرة على التجارة في منطقة الخليج العربي، بعد ان كان الأخير تحت السيطرة الهولندية.
