Investigating the Development of Pragmatic Knowledge Awareness of Iraqi EFL University and Its Effect on Students' Performance

Abstract

The research aims at :
1-Investigating EFL university students' awareness of pragmatic knowledge.
2-Comparing EFL university students' awareness of pragmatic knowledge according to stages.
3- Investigating the pragmatic knowledge effect on EFL university students' performance in English.
The hypotheses have been tested as follows:
1-Iraqi EFL university students' have no awareness of pragmatic knowledge.
2- There are no statistically significant differences among Iraqi EFL university students' awareness of pragmatic knowledge according to their stages.
3-There is no effect of pragmatic knowledge on EFL university students' performance in English.
    A random sample has been selected at the Department of English , for the academic year 2016-2017. A sample consists of 60 students. The data of the two instruments have been statistically analyzed  and the following results are revealed :
1-Iraqi EFL university students have awareness of pragmatic knowledge.
2-EFLuniversity students' awareness of pragmatic knowledge have developed according to stages.
3-EFL university students' level in English is affected by pragmatic knowledge. It means that L2 proficiency influenced on the development of  pragmatic knowledge. High language proficiency students have better performance in English than low language proficiency students in English as a second language context.
